The 3rd African STACK Conference for Undergraduate Mathematics will be held at Bahir Dar University from 4th to 8th August 2025. The conference aims to emphasize the impact of STACK in tackling emerging educational challenges both in Africa and globally. It seeks to promote the adoption of STACK to support mathematics teaching and continuous assessment in universities, both locally and internationally. With the establishment of the African STACK Community Leadership Team and access to IDEMS’ Open Question Banks of STACK questions, there is the potential for widespread adoption and institutionalization of STACK for continuous assessment with timely feedback across African institutions, which has been a universal challenge in these contexts. In particular, the Ethiopian setting provides unique opportunities for scalability due to a centralized undergraduate curriculum.
Africa is uniquely positioned to lead in the large-scale adoption of digital technologies for formative assessment of undergraduate mathematics. The conference will serve as a platform for lecturers to share their experiences incorporating STACK into undergraduate courses, including their methodologies and observed impacts. This will give prospective STACK users the opportunity to learn more about STACK. Furthermore, we aim to provide lecturers with a concrete starting point for using STACK through workshops. We also hope to open avenues for collaboration with international partners in conducting research and evaluation, particularly on the effectiveness of digital interventions in assessment in low-resource environments. Large class sizes and growing adoption of STACK in undergraduate courses in the region have proven to be a rich source of data for analysis.
Remark: We are aware of the travel advisories from various governments against traveling to the Amhara region, of which Bahir Dar is the capital. Our local contacts on the ground understand the local situation and based on their assessment we deem it sensible to proceed. We are monitoring the situation and will let people know if our assessment changes. We’d advise against touring around Bahir Dar, but for the city itself we currently have no reasons for concern. If you have any questions, please inquire with abdu.mohamed (a) bdu.edu.et
The conference will include STACK workshops as well as keynote and contributed presentations.
Lecturers who have utilized STACK in their teaching and other participants will have opportunities to present and engage in discussions on their work and challenges related to STACK and assessment at their institutions.
Workshops will offer opportunities to share, improve, develop and analyze courses delivered with STACK integration with the objective of lecturers leaving the conference with courses they can directly deliver, even if they have never used STACK before. Bahir Dar University has developed courses tailored to the Ethiopian undergraduate curriculum, such as Linear Algebra, Calculus, and Basic Maths for Natural and Social Sciences, as well as revision and practice materials for the mathematics undergraduate exit exam and the remedial exam, that are ready for use at other universities.
